One of my students is in charge of planning a fall festival here in Hirakata. From what I gather it has something to do with this temple that sits atop the tallest hill overlooking the city.
They build these portable shrines (omibashi) and then carry them all over the city. She asked me and Sean (the Canadian teacher at my school) to help out.
This is at around 8am. The first time I've been awake before 9 in about 3 months.
The kid in front of the Omibashi is my students grandson. His Mom is Japanese and his dad is Portuguese. His parents speak English to each other since neither one knows the other language, but since they live in France he has to go to French school. So he is 5 but already can speak Portuguese, English, Japanese, and French.

My student Kazue.

Getting ready to start carrying this thing. It was so heavy.

Carrying the Omibashi to the city center. This road we are carrying on it is the original road from Osaka to Tokyo built in the 7th century AD.

Notice the red head in the crowd.

Sometimes being tall is nice. However when you are carrying a portable shrine by putting the base of it on your shoulder its not good for the ole' back.

This is the train station in the center of Hirakata. There were 4 omibashis from around the city.

The town hall. All 4 omibashis met here and a bunch of people said stuff and then clapped. Notice video below.

Sean and I after about 3 hours of hauling this thing around town.

Around 4 everyone got together and had dinner at my students house.

Here are some good videos.
